Glenlea Downs breeds cattle with the aim to produce animals with excellent conformation and constitution.  Ease of calving and temperament are also important traits within the herd.
With 60 purebred breeding cows, we can select rigorously.  Only cattle which meet our standards make it to the bull pen, or as replacement females.

Young Gelbvieh cow and calf

We have a nucleus of Elite cows; cows whose families are proven performers and themselves are leaving good quality calves.  The use of Artificial Insemination on our Elite cows enables us to make full use of the best Gelbvieh genetics available to us.

We use service bulls which were bred via AI.  This way we can accurately predict the breeding performance of his offspring.

If we were to use a bull, by a bull, that was a good bull once, the averages of him leaving good quality progeny diminishes.

The herd is run under commercial conditions, so the progeny from this farm will adapt and perform on your farm.

Cows are drenched once a year, about a month out from calving, and receive copper and selenium supplementation via injection.

All breeding animals on the farm are vaccinated for BVD, and all bulls prepared for sale are blood tested antigen negative for BVD and vaccinated.  Bulls are also vaccinated for Leptospirosis.

Weaned calves receive a pour on at weaning and again early in the spring.
We produce bulls suitable for heifer mating, and use within the dairy industry.  Bulls are also bred suitable for high performance beef herds.  These animals have exceptional growth rates, but do not compromise on calving ease.

Our breeding objective to turn out bulls and females which perform under New Zealand’s conditions, and excel in the production of beef.  Temperament, conformation and milk make Gelbvieh the ideal beef producer for your system.
